NHS vs Private Dentist in the UK: What Is the Difference?
It is one of the most common questions people have when they start thinking seriously about their dental health. Do I stick with the NHS, or is it worth going private? And if I do go private, what am I actually paying for?
There is a lot of noise around this topic online, most of it either vague or written by people trying to sell you something. So we thought it was worth giving you a genuinely honest answer, written from the perspective of a private practice that cares about helping patients make the right choice for them, even if that choice is not us.
At Denstudio on Harley Street, we see patients from all kinds of backgrounds. Some have never had an NHS dentist. Others are switching after years on an NHS list. Many are somewhere in between, using the NHS for routine check-ups but coming to us for more complex or cosmetic work. There is no single right answer, and this article will try to explain why.
How NHS Dentistry Works in the UK
NHS dentistry in the UK is structured around a banding system. You pay a fixed charge depending on the type of treatment you need, and that charge covers everything within that band, regardless of how complex the work turns out to be.
As of 2025, the three NHS charge bands in England are:
Band 1 (around 26 pounds): covers an examination, diagnosis, and preventive advice, including X-rays and a scale and polish if clinically needed
Band 2 (around 73 pounds): covers everything in Band 1 plus fillings, root canal treatment, and tooth extractions
Band 3 (around 319 pounds): covers everything in Band 1 and 2 plus crowns, dentures, and bridges
For a lot of people, this makes NHS dentistry extremely good value for routine care. If you have broadly healthy teeth and just need a check-up and occasional filling, the NHS system works well and the cost is very manageable.
The challenges tend to emerge in three areas: availability, time, and scope of treatment.
The Real Limitations of NHS Dental Care
It is important to be clear that this is not a criticism of NHS dentists as clinicians. Many are excellent. The limitations of NHS dental care are structural, not personal.
The NHS dental contract is built around high patient throughput. Dentists are paid per unit of dental activity, which creates an inherent incentive to see as many patients as possible in a given day. That means appointment slots are short, typically fifteen to thirty minutes, and there is limited time for the kind of detailed conversation and careful planning that more complex cases need.
Cosmetic treatments are not available on the NHS at all. Teeth whitening, composite bonding, porcelain veneers, and clear aligner orthodontics like Invisalign are entirely outside the scope of NHS dental care. If those treatments are something you are interested in, private dentistry is your only option.
There is also the question of materials. NHS dentistry uses clinically approved materials, but these are not always the same as the premium options available in a private setting. For fillings, NHS patients are often offered amalgam or standard composite where a private patient might receive a higher-grade ceramic restoration that looks and lasts better.
And then there is continuity. In a busy NHS practice, you may see a different dentist each time you visit. Building a genuine relationship with a clinician who knows your full history and understands your priorities is much harder in that environment.
What Private Dentistry Offers That the NHS Cannot
Private dentistry is not just NHS dentistry with better decor. The difference in what you receive goes much deeper than that.
The most fundamental difference is time. At a private practice like Denstudio, appointments are allocated based on what you actually need. A new patient consultation might last forty-five minutes to an hour. A complex restorative case will have the time it deserves. Nobody is watching the clock or trying to move on to the next patient before the job is properly done.
This is the foundation of the slow dentistry model that Dr. Jana Denzel practices at Denstudio. Slow dentistry is the deliberate choice to prioritize thoroughness over speed, and to treat every patient as an individual with their own history, concerns, and goals. It is a very different experience from what most people have had in a conventional dental setting, NHS or otherwise.
Private dentistry also gives you access to the full range of modern dental treatments. At Denstudio, that includes:
Cosmetic dentistry: teeth whitening, composite bonding, porcelain veneers, and smile makeovers
Orthodontics: Invisalign and clear aligner treatment for straighter teeth
Restorative dentistry: crowns, bridges, and dental implants using premium materials
Preventive care: detailed hygiene appointments, personalized oral health plans
Anxious patient care: slow dentistry, agreed stop signals, and a fully supportive approach
Continuity of care is another major difference. When you come to Denstudio, you see Dr. Jana Denzel. He knows your history. He remembers your last appointment and what you discussed. That kind of ongoing relationship makes a significant difference to both the quality of your treatment and how comfortable you feel coming back.
Can You Use Both NHS and Private Dentistry?
Yes, absolutely. Many people do. It is entirely possible to use an NHS dentist for routine check-ups and hygiene appointments while using a private practice for cosmetic work or more complex treatments. There is no rule that says you have to choose one or the other.
Some patients come to Denstudio specifically for a smile makeover or Invisalign treatment, while continuing to see their NHS dentist for their annual check-up. Others start with a single private consultation to get a second opinion on something their NHS dentist has recommended. We are happy to work alongside your existing dental care in whatever way makes sense for you.

Denstudio is a boutique private dental practice on Harley Street in central London. We are led by Dr. Jana Denzel, who brings extensive experience in both restorative and cosmetic dentistry and a clinical approach that is rooted in slow, patient-centered care.
Patients come to us for a lot of different reasons. Some are returning to dental care after a long gap and need a practice that will not rush them or make them feel judged. Some are looking for cosmetic treatments like veneers or composite bonding and want a clinician who will take the time to understand what they actually want. Some have simply had enough of short, impersonal NHS appointments and want something different.
What they all tend to have in common is that they want to feel like the appointment is about them, not about getting through a list. That is exactly what Denstudio is built to deliver.
