Invisalign vs Braces: Pros and Cons

By Dr. Jana Denzel

If you’re considering straightening your teeth, you’ve likely come across two main options: Invisalign clear aligners and traditional fixed braces. Both can deliver excellent results, but they work in fundamentally different ways and suit different lifestyles. At Denstudio on Harley Street, we help patients understand the trade-offs so they can choose with confidence.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign uses a series of custom-made, transparent plastic aligners that fit snugly over your teeth. Each set is worn for one to two weeks before moving on to the next, gradually shifting teeth into their target positions. The aligners are removable, meaning you take them out to eat, drink and brush your teeth.

Treatment is planned digitally using 3D scanning technology. Before you begin, you can see a simulation of how your smile will look at the end of treatment — something that isn’t possible with traditional braces.

How Traditional Braces Work

Fixed braces use metal or ceramic brackets bonded to each tooth, connected by an archwire. Your orthodontist adjusts the wire at regular appointments to apply controlled force and guide teeth into alignment. Because they’re fixed in place, braces work continuously — there’s no risk of forgetting to wear them.

Invisalign: The Pros

  • Nearly invisible — clear aligners are discreet and difficult to notice in conversation, making them popular with working professionals.
  • Removable — you can eat whatever you like and maintain your normal brushing and flossing routine without navigating around wires.
  • Comfortable — smooth plastic edges cause less irritation to cheeks and gums compared to metal brackets.
  • Fewer appointments — check-ups are typically every six to eight weeks, with less chair time per visit.
  • Predictable planning — digital treatment simulation lets you visualise the outcome before committing.

Invisalign: The Cons

  • Discipline required— aligners must be worn 20–22 hours per day. If you regularly forget, treatment slows down or stalls.
  • Not ideal for all cases — severe crowding, complex bite issues or significant rotations may respond better to fixed braces.
  • Attachments — small tooth-coloured bumps are sometimes bonded to teeth to help the aligners grip, which can be slightly visible.
  • Cost — Invisalign can be more expensive than standard metal braces, though the gap has narrowed considerably.

Traditional Braces: The Pros

  • Handles complex cases — braces remain the gold standard for severe malocclusions, large overbites, underbites and significant rotations.
  • No compliance factor— because they’re fixed, they work around the clock without relying on patient discipline.
  • Ceramic options — tooth-coloured ceramic brackets offer a more aesthetic alternative to metal while retaining the benefits of fixed appliances.
  • Generally lower cost — metal braces tend to be the most affordable orthodontic option.

Traditional Braces: The Cons

  • Visibility — metal brackets and wires are noticeable, particularly in close conversation or photographs.
  • Dietary restrictions — hard, sticky or crunchy foods can damage brackets or wires and must be avoided.
  • Oral hygiene challenges — cleaning around brackets requires extra time and specialised tools such as interdental brushes.
  • Discomfort — brackets can irritate the inside of the cheeks, especially after adjustments.

Which Option Is Right for You?

The best choice depends on the complexity of your case, your lifestyle and your aesthetic preferences. For mild to moderate alignment issues — which account for the majority of cases we see — Invisalign offers an excellent balance of effectiveness, comfort and discretion. For more complex orthodontic problems, traditional braces may deliver a more predictable result.

At Denstudio, Dr Jana Denzel will assess your teeth, discuss your goals and recommend the most suitable approach. Many patients are surprised to learn that their case can be treated with Invisalign when they assumed they’d need braces.

Cost Comparison

At Denstudio, Invisalign treatment typically ranges from £3,500 to £5,500 depending on complexity. Traditional braces start from around £2,500 for metal and £3,500 for ceramic. We offer interest-free finance options to spread the cost across monthly payments.

The Retention Phase

Regardless of which method you choose, retainers are essential after treatment. Without them, teeth naturally drift back towards their original positions. At Denstudio we provide both fixed bonded retainers and removable Vivera retainers to protect your investment long-term.
