The Invisalign Journey: From Consultation to Your Dream Smile

By Dr. Jana Denzel

Starting Invisalign is one of the most rewarding decisions you can make for your smile — but it helps to know exactly what to expect before you begin. At Denstudio on Harley Street, we guide every patient through a clear, structured process from the very first appointment to the day their retainers are fitted. Here’s what the journey looks like.

Step 1: The Consultation

Your Invisalign journey begins with a consultation with Dr Jana Denzel. During this appointment, we carry out a thorough clinical examination to assess the position of your teeth, your bite and your overall oral health. We discuss your goals — whether that’s closing gaps, reducing crowding, correcting an overbite or simply achieving a more uniform smile.

If Invisalign is suitable for your case, we take digital impressions using an iTero 3D scanner. This replaces the old-fashioned putty moulds with a fast, comfortable scan that captures every detail of your teeth in minutes.

Step 2: Your ClinCheck Treatment Plan

Using the 3D scan data, we create a ClinCheck treatment plan — a digital simulation that maps out the precise movement of each tooth from its current position to its ideal position. You can watch an animation of your teeth shifting stage by stage, giving you a clear preview of the final result before any treatment begins.

This is one of the most exciting parts of the process. Many patients are genuinely moved when they see their future smile for the first time. Once you’re happy with the plan, we approve it and your custom aligners are manufactured.

Step 3: Fitting Your First Aligners

When your aligners arrive, you’ll come in for a fitting appointment. We check that each aligner seats correctly and make any necessary adjustments. In some cases, small tooth-coloured attachments are bonded to specific teeth to help the aligners grip and apply force more effectively — these are barely noticeable.

You’ll receive your first few sets of aligners to take home, along with detailed instructions on wear, cleaning and what to expect in the first few days.

Step 4: Wearing Your Aligners

Each set of aligners is worn for one to two weeks, depending on your treatment plan. You should aim for 20–22 hours of wear per day — essentially removing them only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush your teeth.

The first day or two with a new set can feel tight. This is completely normal and means the aligners are working. Any discomfort is typically mild and short-lived.

Step 5: Progress Check-Ups

You’ll visit Denstudio approximately every six to eight weeks for a progress check. These appointments are usually brief — we verify that your teeth are tracking correctly and provide your next batch of aligners. If any refinements are needed, we can adjust the plan mid-course.

Step 6: Refinements

Once you’ve worked through your initial set of aligners, we assess the result. In many cases, minor refinements are needed to perfect the final position of one or two teeth. This involves a new scan and a short additional set of aligners. Refinements are a normal part of the process and are included in your treatment plan at Denstudio.

Step 7: Retainers

When your teeth have reached their final position, we fit retainers to keep them there. At Denstudio, we typically provide both a fixed bonded retainer (a thin wire bonded behind your front teeth) and removable Vivera retainers for nighttime wear.

Retainers are the most important part of your orthodontic treatment. Without them, teeth will gradually drift back towards their original positions. We advise wearing your removable retainers every night for the first year, then several nights a week thereafter.

How Long Does Invisalign Take?

Treatment duration varies depending on the complexity of your case. Simple alignment corrections can be completed in as little as three to four months. More complex cases involving significant movement or bite correction typically take 12 to 18 months. The average treatment time at Denstudio is around nine months.

Tips for a Smooth Invisalign Experience

  • Wear your aligners — compliance is the single biggest factor in achieving a good result on schedule.
  • Switch at bedtime — putting in a new set before sleep lets you sleep through the initial tightness.
  • Keep a case with you — never wrap aligners in a napkin. More aligners are lost in restaurants than anywhere else.
  • Clean daily — rinse aligners with lukewarm water and brush them gently. Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic.
  • Stay on top of oral hygiene — brush after every meal before reinserting your aligners to prevent staining and decay.
